James McAtee believes Pep Guardiola will allow him to control his own destiny this summer, but stopped short of revealing if he will go to the Club World Cup or the Under-21 Euros.

McAtee is an integral part of Lee Carsley’s Under-21 side and the City midfielder is one of just four survivors from the squad that won the last European Championships.

But Man City’s involvement in the Club World Cup, which starts on June 14, directly clashing with the Euros in Slovakia this summer, means he may not play any part for Carsley this time around.

Pressed on where he wants to be come June, McAtee would not be drawn.

‘Maybe, maybe not? I’ve not made my mind up yet,’ he said.

‘It’s a great opportunity for both so it’s something I need to chat to City and Lee [Carsley] about. I’d love to go to both.

‘I think I’ll get a say in it. But as I say, I haven’t made my mind up.

‘I think my opinion will matter and the boss back home [Pep Guardiola] will listen to me.’

It has been a tricky season to date for McAtee having not been given a single start in the Premier League, getting 123 minutes off the bench through 10 games.

But Guardiola has previously dismissed suggestions about selling the Salford-born playmaker this summer and with a greater role expected to be forthcoming for the 22-year-old the Club World Cup may be viewed at City as a key period.

From Carsley’s point of view it is clear that McAtee’s involvement at the Euros would represent a huge boost to England’s hopes of defending their title, underlined by his goal and assist in a 5-3 defeat to France.

‘I think it’s something that we need to talk about,’ Carsley said.

‘I think if players can be involved in such a competition like the Club World Cup then obviously they go with our blessing. But he’s a player that’s very important for us.

‘It’s down to the club and we’ll go off whatever they want and we’ll support James with that.’

Carsley sat down for a chat with McAtee in recent days to go over a number of things, not least his thinking on the summer.

But McAtee also detailed how he is brimming with confidence every time he comes away with England and that is in no small part down to Carsley.

‘We had a chat the other day and he just told me he’s got all the confidence in the world in me and that just helps me a lot with my game and creativity,’ he added.

‘I know I’ve done it before [at this level] and the boys trust me so they give me the ball. I feel like I can play with freedom.’
