Ricky Evans responds to Raymond van Barneveld criticism after bursting into tears on stage
Ricky Evans has released a statement defending Raymond van Barneveld after the Dutch icon came in for criticism for his reaction to a grieving Evans breaking down in tears on stage
Ricky Evans has defended Raymond van Barneveld after their encounter at the European Darts Trophy following online backlash against the Dutch legend.
A grieving Evans, who recently lost his sister Elisha, achieved his first stage victory over the five-time world champion during the event in Gottingen, Germany on Friday.
After sealing a 6-4 win, Evans was visibly moved to tears. However, a dejected Van Barneveld appeared unaware of Evans’ emotional state as he gave a quick handshake before exiting the stage, which led to criticism from fans on social media.
But Evans has defended Barney, revealing that the darts veteran had offered his condolences about his sister’s death.
Evans took to social media, stating: “I’m seeing Raymond get a lot of unnecessary hate on social media, and I just wanted to address this. Raymond was the first person to come up to me in Leicester at the recent Pro Tour events to offer his sympathy for my recent bad news, and I love and respect him massively.
“We have spoken this morning, and he wished me well for the rest of the tournament. There is no bad blood or issue at all between us, we both just wanted to win last night.”
Evans further stated his respect for the Dutchman, adding: “I didn’t care how I won – it’s not just beating Raymond, it means a lot to me.
“I’ve just won a game of darts after everything I’ve been through, so I’m the happiest man in Germany right now. I’m still in this tournament but this is huge for me.”
Despite the win, Evans lost to Dave Chisnall in the second round 6-1 on Saturday after the World No.9 impressively went six for nine on his doubles.
