England followers say identical factor as Reece James scores ‘worldie’ after Latvia miss ‘sitter’
England fans lauded Reece James as the Chelsea star put England in front against Latvia with a ‘worldie’ free kick after Latvian star Vladislavs Gutkovskis missed a ‘sitter’ following defensive mix-up
England fans lauded Reece James after the Chelsea captain put the Three Lions ahead from a free-kick.
A frustrating first-half for England finally saw Thomas Tuchel’s side break the deadlock against Latvia as James found the top corner with a stunning free-kick in the 38th minute.
In his first appearance for England in two years, James whipped a free-kick from 25 yards into the top corner to give the hosts the lead.
Fans took to social media to laud James’ return and goal, with one fan lauding him the “Best right back in the world.” A second added: “Reece James is back!” While another said: “Fully fit Reece James is the best RB in the world , none of this Trent nonsense.” With a fourth calling the goal a “Worldie”.
However, Latvian striker Vladislavs Gutkovskis should have put the minnows in front earlier as he missed an open goal.
Gutkovskis had a golden chance to put the 140th world ranked nation ahead at Wembley when he capitalised on a mix-up between Jordan Pickford and Marc Guehi.
Twenty minutes into the World Cup qualifying game, Gutkovskis put Guehi under pressure as the Crystal Palace defender attempted to shepherd the ball back to Pickford.
However, under pressure, Guehi knocked it around the on-rushing Pickford, the ball then rolled into space for the Daejeon Hana Citizen striker towards the touchline.
Gutkovskis took on the shot first time from a tight angle but could only find the side netting, seeing England breathed a huge sigh of relief.
ITV commentator Lee Dixon called the miss a “sitter”. As fans took to social media to slam the calamitous mix-up, with one user saying: “That’s shocking defender from Guehi and Pickford.” A second added: “Terrible mix up.”
