Liverpool ace Dominik Szoboszlai hurled a sneaky jibe at Arda Guler following an on-field ‘shush’ from the rising Real Madrid talent.

During Hungary’s UEFA Nations League playoff against Turkey in Budapest, Guler quieted the Liverpool midfielder and Szoboszlai hit back with a cryptic Instagram comment.

After trailing 3-1 from the first leg, Turkey sealed their triumph with strikes from Hakan Calhanoglu, Abdulkerim Bardakci and Guler himself.

The Real Madrid protege didn’t miss the chance to silence one of his rivals, directing a ‘shush’ gesture towards Szoboszlai during the game.

A snap of this cheeky moment was posted by a Hungarian news source on Instagram, eliciting a cutting response from Szoboszlai who simply replied with “1088”, an allusion to Guler’s mediocre playing minutes for Madrid across all contests.

The 20-year-old switched to Real Madrid from Fenerbahce in 2023, and though he has clocked up 43 appearances for the Spanish giants, a bulk of those have seen him come off the bench. His tally so far stands at nine goals.

Szoboszlai meanwhile has been a mainstay for Arne Slot’s Premier League leaders this term, his drive and goals from midfield propelling the Reds towards a record-equalling 20th league title.

And fans loved his cheeky comment, with one responding on X: “Szoboszlai got straight into the dressing room and googled how many minutes Arda Guler has played this season, this is the level of hater I aspire to be.” Another fan said: “bench players acting like starters.”

And a third fan, referring to Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Madrid earlier this season, commented: “Arda Güler came to Anfield and played like prime Lakaka missing shots and putting even Nunez to shame. That’s the reason they don’t give him minutes. Szobo on the other hand will be lifting prem after actually being involved in first team rather than warming bench”

Turkey’s head coach Vincenzo Montello has commented on Guler’s somewhat limited action at the Santiago Bernabeu but is confident that it won’t be long before the youngster carves out a more prominent role, reports the Mirror.

“He is an exceptional footballer. We all know his talent and what he can contribute,” he said. “It is a well-known and generally accepted trend that players with consistent game time at their clubs are usually selected for the national team. However, we must take a more understanding approach with Arda Guler.”

His Turkey teammate Calhanoglu, however, has urged Guler to join him at Inter Milan. “Arda is a very important player; he’s like a little brother whom I love very much. I would like him to come and play with us-at Inter-although I don’t know if this is true,” Calhanoglu said.

“I don’t know what his situation is at Real Madrid, so I don’t want to get too involved in this situation because in the end, he knows more, although of course, I want and believe he deserves to play more minutes.”

Guler will be hoping to make an impact for Real Madrid in the coming weeks as they aim to clinch La Liga and the Champions League titles. They are set to face Arsenal in the quarter-finals next month.

Meanwhile, Szoboszlai will have to concentrate on Liverpool’s title pursuit, with their next match against Merseyside rivals Everton following the international break.
