‘Man carrying two knives’ places faculty in lockdown as youngsters scramble below tables

A school was placed in lockdown with kids told to hide under desks after a “man with two knives” was spotted nearby. The terrifying incident occurred at St Mark’s C of E School in Southampton, Hampshire.

Parents are also believed to have been locked inside the building. The order to begin the lockdown began at around 3.20pm when the man, 44, was seen holding the two knives in a nearby road.

Hampshire Police are believed to have attended and arrested the man, allowing the school to cancel the lockdown. One parent who was among those trapped in the school told the Southern Daily Echo: “It is madness. The kids are hiding under tables and there is a tannoy going ‘lockdown’.

“A lockdown like this is not good for the mental health of the kids. It is a bit bizarre.”

Hampshire Police confirmed there were no reports of any injuries related to the incident.

A spokesperson for the Force said: “We received a number of reports at around 3pm on Monday 24 March of a man carrying two knives had been seen walking in Malmesbury Road, Southampton.

“Officers attended and arrested a 44-year-old man, who is currently in police custody. We have no reports of injuries in relation to this incident.”

It is understood the lockdown was lifted some time around 3.30pm.
