Prem icon who scored well-known objective left unrecognisable after horror Nations League damage
A legendary Premier League winner was left looking almost unrecognisable after he suffered a horror injury while turning out for his country in the Nations League
A Premier League icon who scored one of the competition’s most famous goals was left unrecognisable after a horror injury.
Edin Dzeko was the man to nod Manchester City level on that famous afternoon in 2012 as the title started to slide through the hands of Roberto Mancini’s side. A couple of minutes later, Sergio Aguero would write himself into footballing folklore.
At 39-years-old, Dzeko is still playing at the highest level – and he was part of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over Romania on Friday.
However, Dzeko left the stadium looking quite different to how he did when he entered. The striker stooped down for a header, where he was met by the boot of a Romanian defender – leaving him battered, bloodied and bruised.
In a post on social media, he sported two swollen shiners, some tape across his bloodied nose and a bandaged wrist.
“All IN or nothing,” Dzeko declared in a defiant Instagram post. And his former team-mates were quick to flood the comments section to joke about his new look.
“@edindzeko you look nice like this,” Mario Balotelli joked, adding a heart emoji. While Radja Nainggolan responded: “You look great!”
“Cheers brother you will come back better,” Anderson Talisca posted. While his former club Wolfsburg said: “Nothing can stop you, legend!”
Dzeko was part of Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga title winning team, before he moved to the blue half of Manchester in 2011 – he would stay in 2016, winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and the League Cup.
The Bosnian has since turned out for Roma, Inter Milan and Fenerbahce. All while turning out internationally for Bosnia where he is their leading leading appearance maker and goalscorer.
Dzeko starred in their only previous World Cup appearance in Brazil back in 2014.
Bosnia continue qualifying at home to Cyprus on Monday, with their group also containing Austria and San Marino.
