Welsh sprinter Jeremiah Azu units his sights on breaking the British 100m file this summer season after claiming gold at each the European and World Indoor championships

Jeremiah Azu is targeting breaking the British 100 metres record this summer after his fabulous fortnight indoors.

The Welsh sprinter was crowned world indoor 60m champion in China last Friday, just two weeks after winning gold at the European Indoors in the Netherlands, running a lifetime best of 6.49sec in both finals.

Now Azu believes he can use his stunning 60m success as a springboard to smashing his personal best over 100m, admitting Zharnel Hughes’ national record of 9.83sec is in his sights.

‘I believe I can run 9.8,’ admitted the 23-year-old, who broke 10sec for the first and only time in Germany last May, when he clocked 9.97sec.

‘I’ve always known I’ve had the ability to do it, so something like this (running 60m in 6.49sec) just confirms this for me. I wouldn’t need to do anything crazy with a 6.49 to go 9.8.

‘We have got Zharnel with the British record right now, but it’s nice to be knocking around that ballpark and to be in that conversation.’

Azu’s only major individual medal in the 100m came at the European Championships in 2022, when he claimed a bronze.

After making the British team for last summer’s Paris Olympics, he was disqualified from his 100m heat because of a false start.

But the ambitious Azu reckons he can earn a podium place at the World Championships in Tokyo in September.

‘That’s always the goal,’ he added. ‘It would be amazing to get on that podium – and why not?

‘You have to do it when it matters and I know that’s something that I’ve got. I’m confident in my 100m and how the season is going to pan out.’
