A Sunderland fan has been criticised by fellow supporters of the club for a bizarre act he committed during a game against Newcastle on Sunday.
The contest, which took place at St. James’ Park in the second tier of the Women’s Super League, saw the two sides play out a closely-fought encounter.
Shania Hayles scored the only goal of the game in the 77th minute to give the Magpies bragging rights over their North-East rivals.
But the fixture was overshadowed by the actions of one Sunderland fan – who was keen to poke fun at Newcastle fans.
With no segregation in place at the match, a supporter wearing a Sunderland shirt could be seen running from his seat to grab a Newcastle flag.
He then pretends to wipe his backside with it before being escorted away from the scene by a steward.

Reacting to the video after it was originally posted on X, formerly Twitter, members of a Sunderland Facebook group commented on what they thought of the incident.
Several angry users voiced their displeasure with the individual’s actions, saying it reflected badly on the club.
One user fumed: ‘Nobody needs this stupid behaviour. [He is] embarrassing himself and the club.’
Another seethed: ‘Pathetic. Embarrassing to our club.’
A third added: ‘I’m a Sunderland supporter and think he is an idiot it’s embarrassing’.
A fourth wrote: ‘Nowt like embarrassing yourself in front of thousands of people!’
Speaking after the game, Hayles said of scoring the winner: ‘I saw an opening and just went for it. I just did what I do and put it in the net.’
‘It’s the best feeling ever. As a forward you always want to score goals, I’ve always wanted to score here – I think I even dreamed about scoring here so to do it is amazing.
