If you’re blessed with a bit of outdoor space, why not spruce it up with some flowers that’ll be in full bloom by the time the sun’s out in force? But don’t fret, wanting a garden bursting with colour doesn’t mean you have to splash the cash – despite what you might think.

TikTokker Cleo Masterson has shared her top tips for jazzing up your garden borders without breaking the bank. First off, Cleo got stuck in and dug up the existing plants in her border, topping up the soil to give her new plants plenty to feed on. She made sure the soil was thick and level so the plants could flourish once they were replanted.

Next, she planted some stunning flowers, urging viewers to “get themselves to B&M”. You can nab the hydrangea she’s been raving about for just a fiver, reports the Express.

She also planted hollyhocks, gushing over their “the most gorgeous flowers” when they’re in full bloom. Cleo then added some lavender to the mix, quipping: “I’m hoping the lavender will stop the cat using this as a litter tray”.

Primrose chimed in, saying: “Luckily, lavender plants come with a scent that’s nice for us but unappealing for felines.

“These purple beauties are evergreen, so they act as a year-round deterrent. Opt for the tall varieties and plant them at the front of your borders as cats won’t jump over if they can’t see where they’ll land.”

Cleo also incorporated viola into her border, creating a vibrant mix of flowers that will bloom beautifully in the coming months.

She then gave the plants “a little water”, acknowledging that there were still “more flowers to be added, hence the spaces”.

Adding a whimsical touch, Cleo installed mushroom-shaped solar lights along the border, ensuring it remains illuminated and visible even after sunset.

You can snag a set of 12 mushroom-shaped solar lights for a mere £5 from BandM. They’re a worthy investment as they can be easily inserted into the ground, just like the flowers.

Here are more gardening tasks to tackle this spring:

Clear debris: Remove leaves, sticks, and any dead plant material that may have accumulated over winter.

Weed removal: Pull out weeds before they have a chance to grow and spread seeds.

Tidy up paths: Sweep and clean garden paths, patios, or decking areas.

Turn the soil: Loosen compacted soil with a fork or tiller to allow better root growth and drainage.

Add compost or fertiliser: Enrich the soil with compost, organic matter, or a slow-release fertiliser to promote healthy plant growth.

Early seeds and bulbs: Plant cool-season crops like onions, peas, lettuce, and spinach, or flowers like pansies, snapdragons, and violas.

Perennials and shrubs: Plant perennials, shrubs, and trees while the soil is moist and temperatures are mild.

Mulch: Spread a layer of mulch around beds and borders to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and improve the soil.
