‘Gordon Ramsay’s £85 burger is ridiculous – one factor about it made me really feel sick’
Gordon Ramsay’s ‘1849’ burger is served at his franchise in Harrods and costs an eye-watering £85 – but is it worth it?
These days you can grab a McDonald’s Big Mac for just over a fiver.
But if you fancy splashing out, Gordon Ramsay‘s ‘1849’ burger at the swanky Harrods in London will set you back a whopping £85. The celeb chef’s posh patty is nearly 17 times pricier than your standard Maccy D’s offering.
But does it really taste 17 times better? YouTuber Ed Chapman reckons not. “£85 for a burger?” he scoffed. “It’s obscene, it’s ridiculous, it’s stupid.”
Despite this, after tucking into the lavish Wagyu beef burger adorned with pecorino cheese, mushroom ragu, truffle porcini, aioli, watercress and aged balsamic vinegar, Ed conceded it was one of the tastiest burgers he’d ever eaten, reports the Express. However, he confessed that shelling out so much dosh left him feeling queasy.
Gordon Ramsay’s 1849 burger has received a mixed bag of comments on TripAdvisor, with some diners singing its praises. But others griped about dry, overdone grub that was “a chore to eat”.
Ed remarked that the experience at Ramsay’s joint was “slightly better than I expected, but also ridiculous”. The truffle parmesan fries that came with his burger were nothing to write home about, described by Ed as “soulless and dead”.
Even though the star of the show, the burger itself, was scrumptious, Ed argued that it did little to warrant the exorbitant price tag. “The bill came to over £100 for a burger and a bottle of water,” Ed said. “Such an outrageous and stupid amount of money for a bit of meat in some bread.”
Although he admitted that the burger was delicious, he questioned its value: “I’m not sure what it could do to be worth that amount of money but it was a really good burger. The patty was juicy, it was flavoursome… it was really, really good.
“Honestly one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. However it cost £85. That’s such a ridiculous amount of money it genuinely makes me feel sick.”
Ed suggested that a more reasonable price for the burger would be around £28. However, as long as Gordon Ramsay continues to sell it for nearly £100 at Harrods, his advice is “just don’t bother”.
Several individuals who have dined there seemed unimpressed by the experience. One jokingly remarked: “Having tasted Gordon’s fare (or fare cooked to his spec and sanctioned by him, at least), I can confidently say that I can make better burgers than Gordon Ramsey.
“If he and I were to have a ‘burger-off’, I believe he would be gentlemanly enough to quietly concede to that fact too.” On the other hand, some patrons thoroughly enjoyed their experience.
One customer raved: “The burgers are simply amazing, and I had the famous 1849 Wagyu beef burger with truffle Parmesan fries. The Wagyu beef burger was definitely five stars, but the price at £80 is very high.
“Comfortable surroundings, friendly and attentive staff along with a good bottle of red and its 10/10 from me.” Representatives for Gordon Ramsay have been approached for a statement.
