The UK’s poshest service station boasts attractive lakeside views and the ‘most interesting meals, crafts and garments’

While most service stations around the UK have a McDonald’s or Greggs, there’s one where you’ll find a farm shop and butcher’s selling locally-sourced produce, and fresh cheeses.

Located on the M6 in Cumbria, just an hour south of the Scottish border, Tebay Services is often regarded as one of the country’s best – and has been described by some on TikTok as ‘proper boujee’.

Worlds away from most services scattered along the UK’s motorways, passengers stopping for a quick coffee or bite to eat at Tebay may be enticed by the pottery and Neal’s Yard products on offer rather than WHSmith sandwiches.

Far from fast food options or supermarket chains, the ‘tasty’ food on offer is all made from scratch, while ingredients are also entirely locally sourced.

For those travelling with their furry friends, the services have a dog seating area inside, while the luxury shop offers well-sourced dog treats and toys.

Guests at the services will also find a beautiful picnic area that overlooks the Cumbrian mountains.

John and Barbara Dunning, a farmer couple from Cumbria, opened the services in 1972 after the M6 motorway was built directly through their farm.

Seeking to ‘bring together thousands of the finest foods, crafts and clothes from our locality, our region and further afield’, the business hopes to ‘champion a wide community of farmers and makers’.

The couple has received plenty of recognition for their efforts, as Which? ranked Tebay Services as the second-best service station in the UK at the end of last year.

Visitors have continuously sung the unique services’ praises on social media too.

One TikTok user, @theroamingslav, described Tebay as ‘a really great service station’ and remarked that it was ‘one of the most pleasant services I’ve ever been to’.

She added: ‘It doesn’t feel like a service station, it feels like you’ve just entered a farm shop somewhere in the countryside. It was really pleasant, it was really quiet and peaceful as well.’

But several users also raised concerns over the significant cost of the items on offer at the services.

According to Tebay Services’ website, a breakfast at the services costs £12.50, while the most expensive lunchtime option – beer battered fish – comes with a hefty price tag of £13.75.

For those wanting a caffeine fix for the road, regular teas are priced at £3.15, while the most expensive large coffee (a latte) costs £4.35.

Lemonades and luxurious smoothies, meanwhile, come in at £4.25.

On a video shared by @the.manc, one person commented the prices ‘make your eyes water’.

Meanwhile, others joked that they would have to ‘remortgage to buy anything here’ and that it was ‘8 grand for a pork pie’.

Another enraged commenter, who claimed to be ‘the biggest hater of Tebay’, remarked: ‘Overpriced and the food isn’t even great.’

But, in response to these critics, many declared the prices are worth it, calling Tebay the ‘greatest of all time’.
