Mason Mount is set to play his first minutes of 2025 as he returns from another injury lay-off.

The 26-year-old’s Manchester United career has not taken off with a string of injuries hampering his near two-year stay at Old Trafford. Since joining from Chelsea in 2023 for £55million, Mount has played just 32 games, including only 12 this season.

However, the 36-time England international was back on the bench in United’s win against Leicester City before the international break, and will be hoping to finish the season with a run of games and remain injury-free.

Upon Ruben Amorim’s arrival, the Portuguese gave a special mention to Mount, lauding his ability as a player, with him seen as the perfect player to play in one of Amorim’s No.10s in his system.

“Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid,” Ruben Amorim gushed back in November. “You can see in his eyes how much he wants this. That’s what matters most to me.

“I’m aware he’s had injury struggles, he wasn’t on the pitch, but now he’s working hard to stay fit and we’re hoping he can maintain that fitness, to showcase all the talent he’s demonstrated, like at Chelsea for instance.”

Fast forward a few weeks, and Mount made a stunning appearance off the bench against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League, helping Manchester United stage a second-half comeback.

Mount was rightfully given a starting spot against Manchester City, but his game was cut short within 10 minutes due to a non-contact injury, looking heartbroken as he was substituted off for Kobbie Mainoo.

Bruno Fernandes and a member of the United staff comforted him as he headed straight for the tunnel. Post-match, Mount was one of the first to pass through the mixed zone, accepting a comforting hug from rapper Aitch on his way out.

After making a comeback from injury just before Christmas, Mount was taken off during the Manchester derby, seeing his chance to shine in one of the season’s biggest games scuppered.

Amorim has expressed that Mount “wants it really badly”, and it’s known that he even attended a summer boot camp in Portugal last year to ensure he was in top shape for the pre-season.

Mount’s injury history in Manchester has raised eyebrows, as he rarely faced issues prior to his transfer.

He played 279 games between the 2017/2018 and 2022/23 seasons, with the injuries he sustained at United primarily being muscle-related, an issue that has plagued several players at Carrington.

The medical team at Carrington has undergone a revamp, and further changes are expected as head of sports medicine Gary O’Driscoll is set to depart the club after a tenure of 18 months.

O’Driscoll’s short-lived stint suggests ongoing issues within the medical department, potentially explaining the high number of muscle injuries sustained by players.

The international break has provided Mount with an additional two weeks to recover, and he will be eager to return to action when the Premier League kicks off again next week.

Despite being signed in the summer of 2023, it’s hoped by those connected to United and Mount, that his tenure at the club could really kick off in the next few weeks.
