Martina Navratilova offers verdict on Emma Raducanu’s teaching state of affairs as she sends warning over ‘greatest query mark’ for British star

  • Emma Raducanu looked back to her best as she reached the last eight in Miami
  • The Brit won four matches in a row for the first time since her US Open triumph
  • Martina Navratilova was encouraged by her run but admits one concern remains

Martina Navratilova was thrilled to see Emma Raducanu back to her best at this week’s Miami Open and the tennis great has offered her advice on how the Brit can carry that momentum forward.

Raducanu, 22, won four matches in a row for the first time since her 2021 US Open triumph, as she reached the last-eight of the prestigious Miami Open.

She ultimately lost a tight match against world No 4 Jessica Pegula 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 but played her best tennis in years during the tournament.

It was hugely encouraging for Raducanu despite a scare at the end of the second set when she complained of dizziness, but she soldiered on.

Navratilova, a winner of 18 singles Grand Slam titles, praised Raducanu for overcoming her physical struggles to claim the second set but remains concerned about her health.

‘It was amazing,’ Navratilova told Sky Sports

‘The way she looked at the end of that second set, you think this match is over and somehow she won the set, she won the tie-break, and still competed in the third but she was not feeling well.

‘I think the stress contributed to that because the weather was fine, it was cool, they finished after 11pm so the weather was [not a factor].

‘The humidity takes it out of you a lot, but still — this was something more for Emma and it’s just amazing that she finished the match.’

A doctor assessed Raducanu during the change of ends as the Brit had her vitals checked while another medics placed ice on her legs and back to help bring down her temperature.

‘I just felt really dizzy,’ Raducanu said after the match.

‘I felt faint. I don’t know. It was very humid out there and we have a long wait, so maybe just an accumulation [of things], and just physical points as well and there were long rallies and heavy conditions.

‘I don’t know how I kind of regrouped in that second set, but in the third I definitely struggled a little bit.’

Navratilova added: ‘If she stays healthy and plays this well, then she’ll be seeded at Roland Garros.

‘I think she’ll move up the ranking well enough into the top 30. The biggest question mark is her health.

‘Hopefully she can sort out her coaching situation because she’s been in a state of flux, but I think she needs to commit to somebody and stay with them for a little bit, see how that works.

‘If she played like she did against Pegula, then the sky’s the limit.’
