It’s a question as old as time, why are so many blokes so unfathomably head-over-heels for breasts and what is it that has casued this global boobie obession?

It’s no secret that blokes tend to like boobs but the reasons behind this primitive preoccupation have been harder to nail down.

There has been debate about whether or not it is a product of socialisation or something that lies in humanity’s core biological makeup. Now, experts at the University of Wrocław in Poland reckon they’ve got to the bottom of things.

The experts asked a simple question, studying whether men who had grown up in an environment where there were often lots of topless women would make them less interested in breasts.

To find the answer, they studied the Dani tribe of Western New Guinea, Indonesia, where until around 20 years ago it was societal convention for women to be topless. That changed with the arrival of Western influence and women started to wear tops.

The study, however, was able to use this to get to the top bottom of things. Researchers spoke to 40 older Dani men who had grown up in the time when there were more breasts on show in the community. They also spoke to 40 younger Dani men who had grown up in a era of women covering up.

Researchers asked the men how often they touched the breasts of their partners and how aroused touching them made them feel.

Interestingly the results, published in Archives of Sexual Behaviour, found there was no difference between the two sets of men.

“The two groups did not differ in terms of how frequently they touch their partner’s breasts during sexual intercourse, [or] how sexually aroused they feel when they see naked female breasts,” it said.

The findings suggest that exposure therefore does not change men’ s infatuation, with research lead Michal Stefanczyk saying to the Times: “What we can say is breasts are sexy – naturally so. Men like breasts.”

According to MailOnline, Steve Stewart-Williams, a psychology professor at the University of Nottingham Malaysia, said: “I’ve often heard people argue that men’s love of breasts is just an invention of Western culture, and that there are cultures out there where breasts are no big deal to men.

“It’s always struck me as implausible — could Western culture have randomly created a male obsession with women’s elbows or nostrils? I find the new study persuasive. And it also strikes me as a win for common sense over an eccentric academic theory.”

Despite this, the study size, remains small.
