Brits urged ‘keep away’ as UK seaside hotspot issued ‘crimson alert’ flood warning
One popular seaside town has been issued with a red alert flood warning after a dangerous concoction of weather and high tides threaten to ruin the Mother’s Day sun
Brits have been urged ‘stay away’ and ‘act now’ as a popular seaside resort town is set to be hit by extreme weather and floods this evening.
Those in Whitby, North Yorkshire, have received a ‘red alert’ flood warning ahead of dangerously high tides rolling in. They should initiate their “flood plans” with businesses also being told to brace themselves for the risky conditions.
The picturesque town, which is popular with holiday-goers, could expect to see the “worst” of the weather-induced floods around the harbour and surrounding areas. It’s predicted that the tides are supposed to be at the highest around 6:45pm, which could later lead to an overflow that will cause flooding.
Floodline issued the warning that told people to “stay away” from the coastal footpaths, roads, beaches and promenades due to the possible impending floods.
It comes at a time where Brits have been enjoying the sun on Mother’s Day, but this could threaten to damage the day in more ways than one.
According to a map released by the flooding agency, the popular River Esk in the town is expected to overflow, which will impact surrounding roads and business.
Areas most at risk:
- Whitby Harbour
- Abraham’s Quay
- Pier Road
- New Quay Road
- Church Street
- Campion Dock
- Bagdale Road
The bad news comes after Brits have been enjoying highs of 17c after months of grey skies and wet weather. Hopefully, the grim red alert passes as Brits will be heading to the beaches come next week when the forecast surpasses 22c.
Local businesses will expect to see sun, sea and sand deprived beachgoers as locations, like Ibiza, have yet to catch up to the sunny weather.
Next week, Brits could experience the ‘hottest day of the year’ so far. However, the weather seems as if it can’t make its mind up as the ‘Beast from the East’ threatens to cover parts of the UK with snow as two storms head our way.
