Paul Mullin’s Wrexham future as Ryan Reynolds’ favorite participant is advised the place he stands
Wrexham star Paul Mullin has been left out of the squad completely in recent weeks, but club director Humphrey Ker insists the striker still has a big part to play in their future
Wrexham star Paul Mullin has been told he still has a future at the club despite being frozen out by manager Phil Parkinson.
The striker has been a talisman for the Red Dragons since joining in June 2021, scoring 110 goals in 172 appearances and firing the club to back-to-back promotions from the National League up to League One. However, despite becoming a firm favourite among fans and Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Mullin has been left out of the squad for all but one of the club’s fixtures since the end of January.
It follows the arrival of forwards Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez during the latest transfer window to bolster the team’s push for promotion from the third tier. Mullin’s continued absence has led to rumours of a rift between him and Parkinson.
However, the 30-year-old Liverpudlian recently dismissed the speculation as “nonsense” after it was raised by a supporter on social media. Wrexham director Humphrey Ker has now said he believes Mullin still has a key part to play for the club, despite not even currently making the bench.
The actor and writer also tipped him to score in the Championship if Parkinson’s side achieve promotion after undergoing surgery on his back last summer. Addressing Mullin’s lack of appearances on the Fearless in Devotion fan podcast, Ker said: “This season has ultimately not gone the way that any of us thought it was going to, or that any of us would have wanted to go for Paul, but I think that there’s still a huge future for him at the club.
“There’s still a prospect of him having a really great pre-season and coming back into the fold. Phil has shown that players can play their way into this team.
“For Paul, there’s absolutely a route back into the first team via hard work, having a good pre-season and going again next year. We’ve always felt he is someone who could score goals in the Championship because he has scored goals in FA Cup games against Championship teams.”
Wrexham co-owner Reynolds has showered Mullin with praise in recent years. He was left blown away by the striker’s autobiography, My Wrexham Story, hailing it as “the best book I’ve ever read”, before adding: “This guy is a hero.”
The Hollywood star even handed the footballer a cameo in his smash-hit movie Deadpool & Wolverine last year. Mullin appeared on screen as ‘Welshpool’ – a nod to Reynolds’ Deadpool character, but with a Welsh twist.
As well as Mullin, fellow striker Ollie Palmer has also found himself sidelined since January. The decision led to public criticism of Parkinson from Palmer’s dad on social media after he urged the manager to “swallow his pride” and play his son more often.
Ker admitted it was difficult to see popular players being phased out of the team, but said signing Smith and Rodriguez was necessary to aid Wrexham’s promotion ambitions. The Welsh side are currently second in League One with seven fixtures remaining, three points ahead of Wycombe who have a game in hand.
Ker added: “It’s something that is a very difficult part of this process because both of those players are bona fide club legends. But equally, I think the challenge is that our responsibility has to be to the club and to the team.
“The feeling was that in January, it might be possible to inject something more and something different into the frontline, and that’s what we went out and did. Ultimately, those players have been the ones that have put us on this course in the past few months.”
