Pictures have been released of a mother who was stabbed alongside her son in a terrifying knife attack at their home that left her husband dead.

Maria Marvin and her son Mario, 11, suffered horrendous injuries in the knife rampage at their home yesterday morning at around 7.30am.

Her husband Emad Botros-Farag, 57, suffered catastrophic injuries in the attack and was later pronounced dead.

Police arrested a 19-year-old man, who is known to the family, in the house and said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the murder.

Emergency services were called after neighbours heard ‘loud screaming and shouting’ coming from the three-bedroom home in Brighton.

Neighbours said the couple’s daughter was shouting and banging on an upstairs window begging people to call the police.

They said they could hear a child screaming: ‘No, No! Stop. Help! Help!’

Maria is then understood to have stumbled out of the neat terraced house and collapsed, bleeding on the lawn.

Police and paramedics rushed to the house in Hartfield Avenue, Hollingbury to find a scene of carnage.

Inside the property police officers discovered Mr Farag – who was a Deliveroo driver – lying dead.

Little Mario was found suffering from serious injuries while his sister Giulia, is believed to be unharmed.

Friends, neighbours and delivery driver colleagues paid tribute to the ‘hardworking family man’ who lived for his children who he doted on.

They said the family, who are Egyptian but have lived in the UK for many years, were looking forward to an upcoming Easter holiday in Egypt.

Andrew George, a colleague, said: ‘Emad was a lovely man, really kind and friendly.

‘He was very well-liked by everyone and he would do anything for anyone. I can’t believe he’s gone. It’s tragic.’

Ollie Johnston said: ‘It’s so shocking. Emad loved his family and was dedicated to his kids. He adored Mario and would have him with him in the car at weekends. They were were inseparable.

‘We just can’t believe it. He had been a delivery driver for years and he was very much part of our community. We’re pretty tight-knit and he was just part of our group.

‘He would do anything for anyone. He was a really lovely guy. He was a bit older than us and wasn’t so good with the technology side of things. We were like his IT support.’

Neighbours described the terrifying moment the calm of a Tuesday morning was broken on the quiet residential road.

Martin, a neighbour, was getting ready for work when he heard screams and shouting coming from across the road.

‘I heard a child screaming: ‘No, no. Stop! Help! Help!’ and then shouts of ‘Call the police, call the police.’

He said: ‘I looked out and saw the daughter hammering on the upstairs window shouting and screaming for help. It was so shocking. I was stunned. I called the police immediately.

‘Then the wife came out of the house and I think she collapsed on the lawn. I think she was seriously injured. I saw a lot of blood.’

He said the family had lived in the house for around two years and had been very good neighbours.

He said: ‘They are a very nice family. They keep themselves to themselves, they’re very private, but they seem very pleasant. They always greet you if you say hello.

‘It’s just so tragic and shocking. I’d see the father going out to work in his silver car. He was a nice guy. He smiled a lot.’

Another neighbour said: ‘I saw the daughter hammering on her window. She was screaming: ‘Call the police! Call the police! She looked totally distraught – there were tears pouring down her face.

‘The police arrived really quickly and I could just hear shouts of: ‘Get on the floor! Get on the floor!’ and then they led out this young man in handcuffs. He was put into a van and taken off. They found a knife, possibly a kitchen knife.

‘It’s just so alarming. I can’t believe it. I can’t believe someone lost their life in that house. I think I’m still in shock.’

Another neighbour, John, said: ‘I heard someone went berserk inside the house. IT was pandemonium. I heard the shouting and the crying and then armed police arrived en masse.

‘It was over quite quickly and they led out this young lad in cuffs. He didn’t seem to be injured. I couldn’t see any blood on him.’

Another neighbour said: There were ambulances and police officers everywhere and everyone was quite alarmed. Initially people though someone might be armed and loose but it quickly became apparent officers had arrested someone. It’s very, very alarming and it sounds tragic. My heart goes out to the family.’

Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Rachel Carr said: ‘A suspect is in custody and a fast-moving investigation is underway to establish exactly what happened and why.’
