UK’s most haunted home was ‘witch jail’ however couple aren’t postpone by spooky ‘ghosts’
A couple have bought the ‘most haunted’ house, as they say they want to renovate the notorious home on the site of a former medieval prison – and plan to live there
A ghost-hunting duo who research into the supernatural have purchased what’s dubbed Britain’s most haunted house, with plans to set up shop and live alongside the spirits.
Amy Waine and Jarrad Cutting are gearing up to give the infamous abode, once a medieval prison, a makeover. Legend has it the property is stalked by the souls of women who were accused of witchcraft and executed. The house’s previous tenant, who lived there from 2004 to 2019, left after alleging she was “roughed up” by ghostly residents. She claimed to have seen eerie apparitions and was shoved to the ground while pregnant.
However, this creepy history hasn’t spooked YouTubers Amy and Jarrad, whose channel Amy’s Crypt boasts more than 300,000 followers.
Amy, aged 35, thinks the two-bed home known as the Cage in St Osyth, Essex, is a gem. “I was attracted to The Cage initially due to its many paranormal reports but after visiting I fell in love with the building,” she shared, reports Essex Live.
“I’m a paranormal investigator and what started as a hobby has taken over my entire life.”
She added: “So to own an important piece of paranormal history and have the ability to use it as a home base for investigating and experimenting was really appealing. Our main focus is to restore and save the house for the future.
“It has unfortunately fallen into a bit of disrepair from sitting empty for so long. We do hope to make it into a comfortable place where we can stay and investigate ourselves. Further in the future we’d love to share the space with other investigators, but I feel the building needs a lot of work before that would be possible.
“I’ve definitely had some experiences within The Cage that I couldn’t explain. These have ranged from noises, smells and even an object moving on its own. It’s still early days for us and we’ve now hooked up cameras throughout the house so we have our fingers crossed we’re able to capture and experience more.
“In the past others have had trouble inhabiting or retaining ownership of The Cage. But for us we hope to hold onto the property long term. We adore the house and hope to show it the love and respect it needs.
“Hopefully the spirits will accept us and allow us to stick around.”
The Cage was used as a prison from the 16th Century until 1908 when it became a private residence.
It has three reception rooms, a kitchen, a ground floor cloakroom, plus two bedrooms and a bathroom on the split level first floor. It featured in Channel 4 documentary True Horror ‘The Witches Prison’ broadcast on Halloween 2018.
