Exact date Liverpool can win Premier League title as Everton do rivals favour vs Arsenal
Liverpool are on the brink of securing the Premier League trophy – further cementing their status as English football’s most successful club by equalling Manchester United’s record of 20 league titles
Liverpool are inching closer to the Premier League crown without even stepping onto the pitch.
The Reds look set to win a record-equalling 20th league title, further cementing their status as English football’s most successful club based on major trophies won, after watching their Merseyside rivals Everton hold second-placed Arsenal to a 1-1 draw on Saturday. Arne Slot’s squad are set to take on Fulham in London this Sunday and could potentially end the weekend with a whopping 14-point lead at the top – it currently stands at 11 after beating the Toffees 1-0 on Wednesday.
Before this weekend, Liverpool needed just 13 more points to secure the title regardless of other outcomes, but Arsenal’s latest stumble has brought the trophy even closer within reach. The best Arsenal can hope for now is 83 points, a far cry from their glory days. Had Arsenal lost to Everton, Liverpool would’ve had the chance to possibly clinch the title on April 20 against Leicester.
Despite the draw at Goodison Park, that date still holds potential for Slot to celebrate a Liverpool title victory, although it would require a massive slip-up from Mikel Arteta’s team.
Liverpool could even clinch the title in only two games’ time, if they beat Fulham and then West Ham next weekend. That would rely on Arsenal just picking up a solitary point from games against Brentford and Ipswich.
But four wins from their next four games, finishing with three points at Anfield against Tottenham on April 27, would see the Premier League giants wrap up the title in front of their own fans.
Arteta has consistently refused to throw in the towel in the title race, despite the seemingly insurmountable odds facing the north London side. Liverpool have been relentless all season, rarely conceding points and suffering only one loss, reports the Mirror.
Liverpool are set to host Arsenal in May, in what will be the third last match of the season. However, by then, it may simply be a matter of pride, with the title likely already decided given the current state of play.
The Reds are eyeing a crucial fortnight from April 20, kicking off against Leicester and wrapping up on May 4 at Chelsea, which could very well see them crowned as champs. Sandwiched in this window is a dream Anfield clash with Tottenham, where they could potentially celebrate in style with their home crowd.
Declan Rice, who featured in the stalemate at Everton, owned up earlier this week that Arsenal have only got themselves to blame for not keeping up with Liverpool’s pace.
Talking to the BBC, he said: “We’ve slipped up one too many times this season, we will keep hunting them down and keep putting pressure on them that’s all we can do.”
