A livid Asda shopper who forked out nearly £200 on shopping was stopped and had her bags raided by security before they snatched her phone – all for smelling of booze.

The TikTok user was horrified when staff at the supermarket in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, wanted to check she had used self-scan properly on the basis that she smelled of alcohol while doing her shop.

A fuming Georgina asked if it was illegal now to do shopping while under the influence in an angry rant as she recorded the encounter. She said it was 9pm on Friday and that, yes, she’d had a drink but she didn’t know why she was being singled out over that.

In a one-minute long clip she confronted at least three staff as they planned to ransack her shopping and check it was all paid for. “So, I’ve just spent nearly £200 at Asda,” she said.

“I’ve been forced to use the self-serve checkout, which I didn’t want to. It’s a pain in the a** and as you can see I’ve got a lot of shopping. A lot of stuff.

“And I have been walked out and marched down here by these security guards.” When confronted about why exactly they had stopped her, one of two security workers simply said “you smell man, you’re drunk, innit”.

They tell her she has to rescan everything because she “stinks,” which one of the guards tells her repeatedly, to which she says: “So what? I had a drink before I went shopping. Since when is that illegal?

“You scan everything and then you’re going to be showing up because I tell you now every single thing has been scanned and it’s been paid for. I just spent nearly £200.”

As she asks an employee how much the exact bill was a member of security can then be seen coming into the frame and snatching her phone off her before the video clip abruptly ends.

The caption for the video states: “Adsa [sic] security guard grabbed my phone after I just spent £200 there I’m not having that.” Not once did they ask her if she was driving.

The TikTok video, posted on Friday, has already got more than 6,000 comments from horrified viewers. “I would absolutely escalate this to their head office,” one user said. “They haven’t indicated you’ve shoplifted or anything. What they are doing is against your consumer rights and snatching your phone is assault!”

“How dare he be so rude,” said another. “The audacity of him to grab your phone, after trying to be rude about you,” added a third.

Asda has been approached for comment.
