Man Utd switch information: Liam Delap ‘benefit’ as membership will ‘do every thing potential’
Manchester United have a crucial Europa League clash ahead on Thursday and it appears success in that competition is becoming increasingly important to the summer transfer window
Manchester United face a potentially pivotal week in their bid for European football next season.
Ruben Amorim’s side travel to Lyon on Thursday for the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final. United’s only route to European football next season remains through winning the competition and landing a Champions League spot.
And it appears that sealing a Champions League place will be crucial to Amorim’s ability to land his top targets in the summer transfer window. Given United’s 13th place position in the league, there is only one route left after they were knocked out of the FA Cup last month.
It’s set to be a busy summer at Old Trafford as the Portuguese looks to begin his overhaul. Here, the Daily Star Sport looks at the latest Manchester United transfer news.
Liam Delap
The Red Devils’ search for a new No.9 in the summer has seen them hotly linked with a move for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.
The 22-year-old former Manchester City striker has 12 Premier League goals for the Tractor Boys this season, who look set to be relegated back to the Championship barring an incredible revival.
According to Ben Jacobs, United aren’t the only club interested in Delap, with Chelsea also in the frame.
And it’s said that the advantage is likely to fall to the club that can offer Delap European football next season. Currently sat 13th in the table, United must win the Europa League to gain a Champions League place. While the Blues are 4th in the table.
Antony
United have been told that Real Betis will “do everything possible” to sign Antony in the summer after the Brazilian has become a fan favourite for the Seville side.
Antony left to join Betis in January on loan after his £80million move from Ajax flopped woefully. But the 25-year-old has four goals and four assists in 13 games for the La Liga club.
“It’s a source of satisfaction on a personal level, but it’s the result of teamwork,” sporting director Manu Fajardo explained in quotes published by Mundo Deportivo.
“Although I’m responsible for the sporting direction, there are many people involved in this signing. It’s still early days, but we’ll try in different ways to do everything possible to continue enjoying Antony.”
Freddie Woodman
Amorim has been reported to want a new goalkeeper in the summer window with Andre Onana still producing costly mistakes despite a promising start to the season.
But United also look set to add depth to the position with it widely expected that Tom Heaton will retire at the end of the season when his contract expires in June.
And according to The Sun, United are interested in signing Preston North End goalkeeper Freddie Woodman. The 28-year-old is set to be a free agent in the summer and would prove a viable backup.
Woodman has Premier League experience after featuring for Newcastle United and could make the jump back to the top flight in the summer.
