Asda shopper reveals weird receipt – and other people do not know if it is spectacular or pointless

An Asda customer has revealed a bizarre receipt, which has left people online variously impressed and confused – but most of all, very curious.

In a Reddit thread titled ‘I went to ASDA and bought 26 items from A to Z. AMA [Ask me anything]’, the anonymous poster displayed a receipt showing 26 products listed in alphabetical order.

It had been framed, presumably by the proud shopper themselves, and was pictured hanging on a wall.

Along with fairly standard supermarket purchases such as apples, bananas, flour and garlic, it included items which are rarely found in the weekly shop – such as a USB stick and an Xbox dock.

While all appeared largely smooth sailing up to the point where they managed to pick up a quiche to fulfil the letter Q, the task became more difficult when they arrived at the last letter of the alphabet.

To be able to tick Z off, the shopping savant, who goes by ‘spacecadet06’ on the platform, purchased a sensory toy known as a Zinkeez.

In the caption, they revealed that this wasn’t the first time they had set themselves a challenge when it came to the grocery run.

‘Some of you may remember my first receipt, which was a number of items bought in such a way as to create a Christmas tree,’ they wrote.

‘This is my next piece. What I like about this one is I went into ASDA not knowing whether what I wanted to do was even possible. But after finding an obscure toy (while looking for something Zebra-themed) it all fell into place.’

The receipt, posted on Reddit’s ‘CasualUK’ thread on Monday afternoon, attracted 1,000 comments in a matter of hours.

One person wrote: ‘A tip of the cap for an impressive (if somewhat pointless) accomplishment!’

Many were also keen to understand how the shopper managed to achieve their goal.

‘From a practical perspective, how could you be sure – ahead of time – that the items were going to show up on the receipt as they did?’ they questioned.

‘I mean, did you know it was going to say “Jam”, rather than “Strawberry Jam”? And “Nuts”, rather than “Mixed Nuts” or “Cashews & Almonds”. And I can imagine this took quite a lot of sorting.’

The Asda customer admitted that they weren’t sure, writing: ‘However, I know from previous experiments that ASDA has very simple descriptions.

Explaining that the task had required some preparation, they added: ‘But the receipt you see wasn’t the first lot of shopping I scanned. Basically I found 26 items, scanned them and all but 2 were good.

‘The offending items were lemons (came up as “je lemons” which stands for just essential) and milk (semi-skimmed milk came up as “se milk” iirc [if i recall correctly])’.

Another Reddit user appeared dumfounded by the shopper’s accomplishment, asking: ‘Why though?’

Here, the Asda shopper revealed their motivation, explaining: ‘Why climb Everest? Because it’s there. In fact, I wasn’t 100% sure it would be possible before I started so that makes me even braver than George Mallory imo [in my opinion]’.

Someone else simply stated: ‘You’re a very very odd person. We’d get on well.’

A fourth Reddit user enquired: ‘Are you a contestant on Taskmaster?’

While a fifth asked: ‘Did you self scan them through in order, or put them on a conveyor belt for the cashier?’

To this, the Asda shopper admitted that while it was possible to complete the task with a ‘human cashier’, it would have opened them up to ‘an awkward conversation’.

Noting that the shopper purchased an Xbox dock to fulfil the letter X, someone else joked: ‘Did they run out of xylophones?’

A seventh Reddit user, who was clearly impressed by the shopper’s achievement, asked of the receipt: ‘Where will you be hanging this masterpiece?’

The shopper replied: ‘The Louvre’.
