Urgent ‘don’t drink’ warning as cans of fashionable lager are recalled resulting from dangerous contamination

Batches of a popular lager have been urgently recalled over fears they could be dangerous to those with severe allergies.

Food safety watchdogs stuck a ‘do not eat’ alert on cans of Jeremy Clarkson‘s brand Hawkstone products.

It is feared two beers — Hawkstone Black and Hawkstone Spa Lager — may contain hidden traces of wheat and pose a risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to gluten.

The Cotswold Brewing Company, which manufactures the product, said the recall affected all batches of both products.

These include Hawkstone Black 440ml cans with the barcode 5060158980567 and Hawkstone Spa Lager 330ml Cans with the barcode 5060158980482.

They added: ‘If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to wheat, do not consume it.

‘Instead return it to the place where purchased where a full refund will be given.

British safety regulator, The Food Standards Agency (FSA), which issued the alert, also said: ‘Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling this product.

Coeliac disease is an auto immune condition where sufferers cannot digest gluten. It is thought to affect around one in every 100 people.

For sufferers of coeliac disease or any other condition which makes them gluten intolerant, an allergic reaction can cause symptoms ranging from rashes to trouble breathing and even unconsciousness.
