Donald Trump’s tariffs might see Britain flooded with cut-price champagne
French winemakers are hoping UK drinkers will save them from ruin after Donald Trump’s tariffs destroyed their US markets, as we are the second largest market behind the US
Brits could soon be quaffing bucketloads of cut-price champagne as panicking French winemakers turn to us to save their bubbly.
They are hoping that UK drinkers save them from ruin after Donald Trump‘s tariffs destroyed their US markets overnight. Although there may be hope for distributors, as Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs.
The UK is the second largest market behind the US for the fancy fizz.
Now supermarkets will likely offer tonnes of bargain-basement bolly to thirsty shoppers, as winemakers try to tempt us with price promotions.
James Simpson, of the UK Champagne Shippers Association, said: “In the current uncertainty the UK is a very good option for producers.
“It is an established market with, frankly, less hassle and fewer tariffs compared to the US.
“We will see producers coming in with promotional activity just as they do at Christmas, Easter or over the summer to generate interest from consumers.”
Back in March, Trump threatened the European Union with a 200% tariff on its booze.
His plan was in retaliation to their “nasty” tariff on whisky imported from the US.
It comes after the EU said it would impose a duty on American made whiskey in response to US tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports.
In his rant Trump called the bloc “hostile and abusive” for taxing £21.9billion worth of American goods.
Writing on website Truth Social, Trump said the tariff on EU alcohol imports would be “great for the Wine and Champagne businesses in the US”.
He said: “The European Union, one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the World, which was formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States, has just put a nasty 50% Tariff on Whisky.
“If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES.“
