Full record of Morrisons shops closing subsequent week amid widespread cuts
Morrisons announced last month the shock closure of 17 stores and 52 of their cafes across the UK, with supermarkets suffering due to rapidly rising prices, see below for next week’s closures
Morrisons has now confirmed the exact dates for the closure of 17 of its Morrisons Daily convenience stores, following last month’s announcement of widespread store changes.
The supermarket will shut down 52 in-store cafés, 18 Market Kitchens, 17 Morrisons Daily convenience stores, and 35 meat and fish counters as part of its restructuring efforts.
Among the 17 convenience stores slated for closure, 16 will cease operations on April 16, with the Haxby Morrisons Daily store following suit on May 14.
In addition to the convenience stores, Morrisons will also close 13 of its florists and four pharmacies, citing that these services proved more costly to maintain than the revenue generated from customer spending.
Unfortunately, these changes will put 365 employee jobs at risk.
Rami Baitiéh, Chief Executive of Morrisons, described the closures as a “necessary” step in the company’s plans to “renew and reinvigorate Morrisons.” He claims the plans will change the business for the better and allow investments into other areas.
Baitiéh said: “Morrisons Cafés are rightly famous for their great quality well-priced food, their place in the local community and their appealing mix of traditional favourites alongside exciting new dishes.
“In most locations the Morrisons Café has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option.
“Market Street is a beacon of differentiation for Morrisons and we remain committed to it. But as we modernise we are making some necessary changes to the areas of the model which are simply uneconomic.
“In some stores where we are closing counters or Cafés, we plan to work with third parties to provide a relevant specialist offer.”
“Although these changes are relatively small in the context of the overall scale of the Morrisons business, we do not take lightly the disruption and uncertainty they will cause to some of our colleagues. We will of course take particular care to look after all of them well through the coming changes.”
The retailer also attributes the changes to the recent increase in employers’ National Insurance and the upcoming rise in minimum wage in April.
