Joey Barton mocked throughout livestream of his aptly named ‘widespread sense’ podcast
Joey Barton was told to show some ‘common sense’ after falling for online pranksters who told him they couldn’t hear him, despite answering his questions during a livestream
Disgraced ex-footballer Joey Barton has been mocked for his lack of ‘common sense’ after repeating a Peter Kay catchphrase while being trolled during a video livestream.
The convicted wife beater, 42, repeatedly asked followers “can you hear me now?” in a cringe clip shared online.
As he went live on the Tiktok page of his aptly named Common Sense podcast, users on the wind up told the former midfielder they couldn’t hear him.
During a 30-second clip shared online after the livestream, he is heard saying: “What’s going on here? Muted, we can’t hear you. Can you hear me now? I don’t think I’m on mute.
“Yeah I’m not sure… people are saying I’m muted here, what is that? Can yous hear me? Can people hear me?”
The Rangers flop, who avoided jail last month after being convicted of assaulting wife Georgia in 2021, has been a vocal critic of female pundits in football in recent years.
But his broadcast skills were mocked by social media users after the clip was shared on Twitter with the caption “Common sense podcast”.
One user replied: “Check ya levels, Joey lad. Use that common sense you’re supposed to have.”
Another referenced Phoenix Nights character Max, played by Bolton funnyman Kay, who repeatedly asked fellow bouncer Paddy if he could hear him when trying out new headsets.
Sharing a photo of Max, he wrote: “Can ya hear me now, am on the bus.”
A third Twitter user mocked: “He said ‘can you hear me?’ Chat replied ‘no’ and he still thought he was muted.”
Another bluntly replied: “Hahahahahahahaa state of this.”
Barton was handed a 12-week suspended prison sentence last month after being found guilty of assaulting his wife at their family home in south-west London in June 2021.
A court heard he pushed Georgia Barton to the floor before kicking her in the head during a drunken row at their family home which left her with a lump on her forehead and a bleeding nose.
And it was also reported last week that his personal company – Joey Barton Promotions – faces being struck off for failing to file accounts on time.
The business’s last details, for 2022, were published in 2023. It had £2,301 plus minor assets but owed £60,988, leaving it £58,539 in the red.
Liverpool-born Barton played for Manchester City, Newcastle, QPR and Burnley in the Premier League as well as a stint at Marseille and Rangers. He was capped once for England.
