M25 main crash as air ambulance and police vehicles swarm the scene with enormous queues

A serious crash has seen a massive eight-mile queue of traffic build up on the M25 – part of the M25 clockwise has been closed and the closure is expected to last for several hours

The M25 clockwise has been reopened this morning (April 9) after a serious crash. Huge queues are delays are still expected after the collision saw a car overturned on the carriage way.

Emergency services have swarmed to the scene including police, paramedics and an air ambulance. The closure lased several hours and drivers have been advised to avoid the area.

National Highways has provided an update, saying: “The motorway has re-opened with 1 lane (of 4) closed for vehicle recovery. Delays of 60 mins currently reported but these should begin to ease now.”

They previously said: “The M25 in Essex is closed clockwise between J25 Waltham Cross Interchange (Enfield, Hertford A10) and J26 Waltham Abbey Interchange (Waltham Abbey, Loughton A121). This is due to a collision resulting in an overturned car.

“Essex Police, Essex Fire & Rescue, East of England Ambulance Service, Essex & Herts Air Ambulance and National Highways Traffic Officers are attending.”

Alongside this National Highway warned of two-hour delays and advised drivers to potentially consider rerouting or delaying their journeys to later today.

National Highways says: “If this closure impacts your planned route, please allow extra journey time as there is a 2-hour delay on approach with 8 miles of congestion. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.

“Further information is available from National Highways by visiting our www.trafficengland.com website and travel apps, or via our regional X feed. Our 24/7 contact centre team is also available to provide up to the minute information on 0300 123 5000.”

The incident occurred at around 8.20am this morning. The Daily Star previously reported on a massive motorway collision on the A1 – a major north-south route this morning, April 9. Multiple police cars were involved in the accident, with early photos showing the back of one police vehicle completely caved in, supposedly from an impact.

The A1 has been closed between J73 (Swalwell) and J75 (Denton) since about 2am this morning with extensive police investigation work under way. Northumbria Police are currently on the scene, but there is no estimate as of yet for a likely reopening time. Major delays are expected this morning as a result.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 2:30am today (Wednesday) we received a report of a multi-vehicle collision on the A1 northbound near the Derwent Haugh Road junction, Gateshead.

“Emergency services are currently in attendance. A section of the road is closed in both directions – there are diversions in place from the Derwent Haugh Road junction northbound, and the A69 roundabout southbound.

“Motorists should use alternative routes where possible.”
