Police assertion on surprising A1 crash as a number of cops rushed to hospital
Seven police officers were taken to hospital after being injured in a collision during a pursuit early this morning.
Two people have been arrested over the incident which has shut the A1 on Tyneside, Northumbria Police said.
Multiple police cars were involved in the accident, with early photos showing the back of one police vehicle completely caved in, supposedly from an impact. A black vehicle can also be see completely overturned, surrounded by other emergency response cars which are equally wrecked, scratched and smashed. Current reports say five people – who have been confirmed as police officers – have been taken to hospital.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson has announced: “Shortly before 2:30am today (Wednesday) we received a report of a multi-vehicle collision on the A1 northbound near the Derwent Haugh Road junction, Gateshead.
“Emergency services are currently in attendance. A section of the road is closed in both directions – there are diversions in place from the Derwent Haugh Road junction northbound, and the A69 roundabout southbound.”
Northumbria Police have said motorists should use alternative routes where possible.
