The alarming video shows the man, who is wearing a green beanie and is sat in the priority seat of the train, smoking from a pipe as commuters around him look on in confusion

Is this the wildest thing photographed on the London Underground

A man was seen brazenly smoking what appeared to be a “crack pipe” aboard a crowded Tube carriage.

The unsettling scene unfolded on a Northern line train travelling between Stockwell and London Bridge, leaving one commuter utterly astounded at the blatant drug use in public.

The footage reveals the man, donning a green beanie and seated in the priority area, inhaling from a pipe as bewildered passengers look on. The carriage quickly filled with a potent chemical odour, according to those present.

Alex Yates, who recorded the troubling scene, recounted: “It was a busy Tube and I saw a big gap between this man and the other passengers and was unsure why.”

He continued, “I then smelled a very strong chemical smell – when I looked up I was in complete disbelief that this man had pulled out a crack pipe and began smoking it.”

Yates also noted the peculiarly British reaction of ignoring the problem, saying, “What I found most fascinating was everyone’s incredibly British response of simply pretending that the issue didn’t exist.”

Aside from a few bemused glances exchanged, there was no significant reaction from the other passengers.

This video, taken in December 2023, joins a series of recent clips showing individuals smoking various substances on public transport.

Reports earlier in the week suggested an “epidemic” of such incidents, with commuters frequently smelling cannabis on lines like the Elizabeth, Circle, and District Line.

TfL, in a statement to MailOnline about one video, said: “We want all customers to feel safe when travelling and we understand the alarm this kind of behaviour could cause.

“We are working with the police, specialist teams and other agencies to help move vulnerable people away from our network and into help and support.”

In response to another incident, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told LBC on Monday: “That situation that you described of somebody smoking crack cocaine on the London Underground is obviously totally unacceptable and I know it will concern the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and the TfL Commissioner Andy Lord as much as it would concern me.

“The overall point to make here is that the transport network in London and across the country as a whole is a relatively low crime environment.

“Clearly any increase in the number of incidents that are happening, whether it’s on the Tube, buses, on the trams in London, the British Transport police, alongside the enforcement officers that work on the Tube will want to tackle that.”
