Manchester United have conceded another goal as a result of a goalkeeping mistake.

The Red Devils took the journey up to the North East on Sunday afternoon without Andre Onana. The Cameroonian shot-stopper was dropped after his recent howler against Lyon, with Ruben Amorim explaining his decision: “Of course, you have to see the context,” he told Sky Sports.

“It is a normal thing. Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again, sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little bit. Tomorrow, he will be in training to prepare for the next one [Lyon] so I felt that it was a good time for Andre to disconnect.

“I think he was okay [about it] because I explained and then, you don’t need to like [it], but you understand because I explain every situation.

“It’s a normal situation,” he reiterated. “You have to manage everything, sometimes people just look at the physical aspect but the mental aspect is really, really important.

“It’s for just one game and we give Altay an opportunity, he deserves it also and then, again, tomorrow is a new life and we will prepare for the next one.”

Newcastle, who were already 3-1 to the good, pressed the young goalkeeper, allowing Joelinton to punch on an ill-timed ball.

He headed it straight through to Bruno Guimaraes who only had the goalkeeper to beat.

“It’s another goalkeeper howler to gift Newcastle a goal,” Alan Smith, who was on co-commentary duties, said on Sky Sports. “But this time it’s not Onana…That is surely that!”

United were dismantled by Newcastle, and Amorim admitted: “Many mistakes, they were stronger in the second balls and are a better team. We did a lot of mistakes which makes it harder to win a game.

“It’s a bit of everything – it’s hard to point at one thing that goes wrong. It’s really hard to win at top teams when you make mistakes to help them to score.

“We can do so much better. Let’s focus on Thursday, all of the mistakes we made today we cannot do on Thursday.”
