Eddie Howe to overlook a number of video games as Newcastle announce reason behind hospital keep
Newcastle United have confirmed that Eddie Howe will miss multiple games as he recovers from illness after the cause of his hospitalisation was revealed
Newcastle United have announced that Eddie Howe is recovering in hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia.
The 47-year-old missed Newcastle’s win over Manchester United on Sunday due to illness. On Saturday, the club said that Howe had been admitted to hospital after feeling unwell “for a number of days”.
In an updated statement on Monday, Newcastle said: “Newcastle United can announce that Eddie Howe is recovering in hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia. The club continues to extend its best wishes and support to Eddie and his family as he continues his recovery. Get well soon, gaffer.”
They added: “Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa this week, with further updates to be communicated in due course.”
In a statement released on the club’s website, Howe said: “A huge thank you to everyone connected with Newcastle United and the wider football community for your messages and warm wishes. They have meant a lot to me and my family.
“I also want to pay tribute to our incredible NHS and the hospital staff who have treated me. I’m immensely grateful for the specialist care I’m receiving and, after a period of recovery, I look forward to being back as soon as possible.”
Newcastle are set to face Crystal Palace at home on Wednesday before travelling to Aston Villa in a crucial match in the race for Champions League qualification.
Howe was admitted to hospital on Friday night after missing his pre-match press conference ahead of the United game due to illness.
He subsequently missed Sunday’s victory at St James’ Park, with Tindall taking charge of the 4-1 win. Goals from Sandro Tonali, a brace from Harvey Barnes and Bruno Guimaraes sent the Magpies 4th.
