Gary Lineker thinks we’re managed by aliens – however no less than we’ll win the World Cup
The former Spurs and England striker admitted he thinks that human life could be part of a Matrix-style computer programme operated by aliens in a kind of video game
Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker reckons he is in a video game being operated by aliens.
The former Spurs and England striker admitted he thinks human life could be a Matrix-style computer programme. Gary, 64, revealed: “I don’t believe in God or anything like that, but I always think that perhaps somewhere on some faraway planet, they have a PlayStation.
“We’re all being moved around by people playing a game, and whoever’s got me has been doing unbelievably well. I’ve been very lucky.” The telly host has fronted the country’s football coverage for decades since retiring as a player – and is set to quit TV presenting next year too.
And he predicted that current Three Lions boss, German manager Thomas Tuchel, will bag England’s first trophy triumph since 1966 after he quits the BBC – labelling himself a “jinx”.
He joked: “That’s what will happen!
“I said to someone the other day, ‘You know what’s going to happen here, don’t you? I am the jinx!’
“As a player, a quarter-final and semi-final. Recently we’ve had two finals in the Euros and the semis of the World Cup – maybe I’m the jinx, maybe I should go this summer! I’ll have one more go…”
Meanwhile, Gary also confessed in the new issue of FourFourTwo mag that he is prouder of his telly career than playing football – even though he was Golden Boot winner for England at the 1986 World Cup.

He added: “In a way it’s my presenting career, because I think I was born to be in the box, not on the box.
“Football came naturally to me, though I thought about it a lot as well. I really had to battle with television for a long time.
“When I started, I wasn’t great, but I wasn’t quite awful enough for them to give up on me.”
The Daily Star recently reported that Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan will take over the presenting duties of the flagship BBC football programme when Gary Lineker hangs up his microphone on a full-time basis.
The role of lead presenter across the BBC’s iconic programme, including Match of the Day 2 and latest addition Match of the Day Champions League, will be shared by three presenters for the first time from next season.
The move comes after it emerged earlier this season Lineker would be stepping down after 26 years of presenting the show, but will still be presenting the men’s FA Cup and men’s 2026 World Cup content.
