International footballer, 28, dies after falling off roof as tributes pour in

Gabonese striker Aaron Boupendza – who played internationally alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – has died after reportedly falling off a roof

Aaron Boupendza, who turned out alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Gabon, had died aged 28.

Boupendza reportedly passed away after falling off the 11th floor of a building in China. He had been in the Far East after signing for Zhejiang FC in January.

He had played for a Number of clubs across Europe – including stints with French side Bordeaux, Turkish outfit Hatayspor and Romanian team Rapid Bucuresti. Boupendza had also played in the Americas.

Boupendza, who played up front, had scored four goals and bagged a further six assists in six matches for his most recent side after making the switch.

He allegedly missed his club’s most recent training session “without any reason.” And Zhejiang chiefs were then unable to contact him when reaching out.

Hatayspor have confirmed the news on social media. In a post on X they said: “We have learned with deep sorrow of the passing of Aaron Boupendza, who wore our Hatayspor jersey in the 2020/21 season and became the top scorer.

“We extend our condolences and patience to his family and loved ones, to the Zhejiang FC team, and to our community. Rest in peace, king.”

The Gabonese Football Federation added: “The Gabonese international died following a fall from the 11th floor of his building in China where he was playing for Zhejiang FC.

“Aged 28, Boupendza leaves us with the memory of a great striker who left his mark on the CAN (Africa Cup of Nations) in Cameroon.”

FC Cincinnati shared: “We are saddened to hear of the tragic passing of former FC Cincinnati forward Aaron Boupendza earlier today at his home in China.

“Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and loved ones. He was a loved member of the FC Cincinnati family, and we offer our condolences to all who knew him. Rest in Peace, Aaron.”
