‘Political Poison’: CNN Data Chief Gives Republicans A Huge Trump Warning

CNN data reporter Harry Enten warned Republicans that President Donald Trump’s approval rating is sinking among independent voters ― and that could cost them dearly during next year’s midterm elections.

“This right here, my dear friends, is political poison,” he said, pointing to a graphic that shows Trump is now 29 points underwater on the economy among independents.

“If an election were held today, and Donald Trump’s net approval rating on the economy was minus 29 points with independents, I’m not quite sure how Republicans can hold onto the House of Representatives,” he said.

Trump’s overall net approval rating among independents has also cratered, and is now 22 points underwater, according to Enten’s aggregate.

“He now holds in this particular term the worst ever net approval rating at this point in a presidency among independents,” he said. “He is completely underwater with the center of the electorate.”

The economy was once among Trump’s strongest issues.

Trump ran on economic issues, and many believe won the election last year in large part because of them. As he took office in January, his approval rating on the issue was in positive territory, with a plus one among independents.

Since then, his trade war and on-again, off-again tariffs have cause stocks to swing wildly, with the market down some 3,500 points since the inauguration.

Trump’s approval rating among independents on the issue has plunged along with the Dow, dropping 30 points over three months, according to Enten’s aggregate numbers.

“What independents are hearing from Donald Trump, they hate,” Enten said. “They hate what they’re hearing from Donald Trump and they are abandoning him in record numbers.”

Enten said there’s never been a swing like that before.

“This is such a record that there is no historical analogy,” he said.
