Pope Francis’ reason for demise revealed as late pontiff went into coma

The Pope’s cause of death has officially been released following his passing on Easter Monday.

The cause of Pope Francis’ death was a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure, the Vatican has said. Previously, his death was detailed as a loss after a battle with pneumonia. But the announcement of the death of the 88-year-old was made this morning (April 21) after he had been in hospital for over a month before being discharged. The news was confirmed by the Vatican on social media, stating: “Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.”

A spokesman said: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church.

The Vatican has spoken out regarding the passing of Pope Francis

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized.

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

Tributes have been flooding in for the leader of the catholic church following his death. King Charles has released the following message: “My wife and I were most deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pope Francis.

“Our heavy hearts have been somewhat eased, however, to know that His Holiness was able to share an Easter Greeting with the Church and the world he served with such devotion throughout his life and ministry.”

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola said: “Europe mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis.

Tributes have been flooding in for the Pope

“His contagious smile captured millions of people’s hearts across the globe. ‘The People’s Pope’ will be remembered for his love for life, hope for peace, compassion for equality & social justice. May he rest in peace.”

In February, the church said the Pope had “bronchoaspiration and was put on non-invasive mechanical ventilation, with a good response in terms of gas exchange” and remained “alert,” a spokesperson said.

He “cooperated with the therapeutic measures”, but the “prognosis therefore remains uncertain”.

It was also noticed that the Pope worked up until his death, with him meeting vice president JD Vance the day before his death.
