Fans slammed Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, after a video captured the moment he performed a ‘disrespectful’ act on Mohamed Salah.

Mo Salah was doused in champagne by team mate Nunez, despite his attempts to deter his teammate, as Liverpool celebrated their Premier League triumph following a 5-1 victory over Tottenham. Nunez and Salah were caught on camera chuckling while Cody Gakpo tried to take a selfie with the squad, including Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister.

But Nunez, clutching a bottle of bubbly, initially feigned pouring it over Salah’s head, only for the Egyptian star to wag his finger in protest. However, as soon as Salah turned his back, Nunez went ahead and drenched him anyway, leading to more laughter before Gakpo finally captured his shot.

Given Salah’s jovial response, it’s likely the champagne was alcohol-free, mirroring the celebrations from five years ago when Liverpool last won the Premier League title.

One user on X wrote: “Nunez purposely pouring alcohol on Salah knowing he’s Muslim, is so disrespectful.. Shame on him.” Another added: “Nunez real life IQ is abhorrent man he’s actually pouring alcohol over Aalah’s head after he asked him not to.”

A third noted: “I hope that champagne was alcohol free. So stupid of Nunez to pour it on Salah.”

Salah’s Muslim faith strictly prohibits alcohol consumption, deeming it haram. Fellow Red Ibrahima Konate also follows Islam, but Liverpool have previously made special arrangements to ensure all players can partake in the festivities without any worries.

When Liverpool ended their 30-year league title drought in the 2019-20 season, they took care to respect both Salah and then-player Sadio Mane. As the team sprayed champagne in celebration, then-skipper Jordan Henderson confirmed it was strictly non-alcoholic.

“The champagne was non-alcoholic with the trophy lift because of Mo and Sadio,” Henderson revealed to The Times. “Within the dressing rooms there’s none of that [intolerance] so why isn’t that the case in the outside world?”

Previously, tensions arose between the two players earlier in the month after the Egyptian appeared to snub his team-mate when the striker trudged back to the halfway line after seeing his spot-kick saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma – one of two Liverpool players to miss on the night.

Tonight, Liverpool secured a monumental win, only requiring a draw against Tottenham to be crowned Premier League champions, yet they sealed the deal with panache. Despite Dominic Solanke’s early scare for Liverpool, the team responded with a barrage of goals from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, and Salah.

The previous league victory in 2019-20 was marred by the pandemic, but this time Anfield was packed to the rafters for Sunday’s festivities. It also marked a significant milestone for head coach Arne Slot, who joined the elite club of managers winning the Premier League in their debut season, becoming the first Dutchman to achieve this feat.

“It is very special because we have had some great managers, especially at a club like this,” Slot expressed to BBC Match of the Day. “I think from the moment we arrived on the bus everyone could feel that we were never going to lose this game.

“The fans were so supportive before and during the game. Even at 1-0 down you felt this team and the fans could get it over the line. Conceding from a set piece is always difficult but from that moment we were outstanding. We could have scored a few more. Tottenham’s focus was probably more on Thursday but you still have to win it and we did.”
