Ruben Amorim faces Man Utd job overview even when he wins Europa League after sacking confession

Manchester United bosses will review Ruben Amorim’s position this summer – even if he wins the Europa League.

The move will come after Amorim piled extra pressure on himself by admitting he might not be the right man for the job, following a 2-0 defeat at home to West Ham that left the fallen Premier League giants 16th in the table.

United’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and chief executive Omar Berrada will hold talks with the 40-year-old Portuguese manager at the end of the season.

It’s understood club chiefs want to discuss the problems Amorim has encountered since taking charge, and thrash out if he is still the right man to take the team forward.

United face Tottenham in the Europa League final next week, with the chance to secure a place in the Champions League.

But whatever happens in Bilbao, Amorim’s position will still be evaluated.

Against the backdrop of a shambolic Premier League season, there are concerns about Amorim admitting he might have to be sacked if he cannot improve results.

Amorim also questioned whether it was worth United beating Spurs in the Europa League final, suggesting they would be better off without Champions League football next season.

Those remarks have put Amorim on a collision course with United bosses, who need the team to win the final because of the £100mi the club will earn by reaching the Champions League.

Amorim and Ratcliffe have a good working relationship, but that alliance could be damaged by the manager’s forthright comments in the wake of the latest defeat.

Financial constraints mean United cannot afford not to be in Europe next season.

But Amorim and his staff have questioned whether it would be better to have a season without European games, to allow them to focus on rebuilding the team.

Amorim has won just six of his 25 Premier League games since taking over from Erik ten Hag, with this season being United’s worst since they were relegated in 1974.

Amorim is under contract until 2027, and would cost United in the region of £10m in compensation if he was dismissed.
