A number of people were trampled and crushed in the mayhem that followed.

Police outside the stadium had to perform a ‘lathi charge’, running at the crowd with batons in order to disperse them.

Some attempted to give victims CPR outside the stadium and ambulances struggled to take those affected to hospital given the vast crowds and traffic.

Four died at Vydehi Multispecialty Hospital, while three were pronounced dead on arrival to Bowring Hospital.

Fans attempting to scale the walls and gates into the stadium suffered injuries, with one man seen on the ground with a broken leg.

Despite the grave situation and devastating crush, large crowds continued to remain outside the stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

A government-organised celebration for the team had been planned but other preparations for a parade route from Vidhana Soudha to the ground had earlier been shelved due to health and safety fears.
