Rachel Reeves announced a major Defence funding injection as the globe teeters on the brink of World War 3. The Chancellor unveiled her Spending Review prioritising Britain’s security, health and the lives of “working people”.

Defence spending will rise to 2.6% by April 2027 as part of the Government’s plan to turn Britain into a “defence industrial superpower”. Ms Reeves quoted Sir Keir Starmer who said the global security situation meant a “new era for defence and security” was needed. Increased spending would lead to jobs across the UK, she added.

She said: “A new era in the threats we face demands a new era for defence and security. That’s why we took the decision to prioritise our defence spending by reducing Overseas Development Aid so that defence spending will now rise to 2.6% of GDP by April 2027 including the contribution of our intelligence agencies.

“That uplift provides funding for the Defence Secretary, with a £11bn increase in defence spending and a £600m uplift for our security and intelligence agencies. That investment will deliver not only security, but also renewal in Aldermaston and Lincoln; Portsmouth and Filton; On the Clyde and in Rosyth. Investment in Scotland. Jobs in Scotland. Defence for the United Kingdom, opposed by the Scottish National Party delivered by Labour.”

It comes as a chilling warning has been issued – World War 3 is imminent. With an escalation in violence across the Middle East, alongside Russia’s never-ending invasion of Ukraine and tensions between North Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan also rising, several experts are now sounding warning bells.

The first warning cam from former Presidential adviser and mouthy podcaster Steve Bannon, who said of the protests in Los Angeles: “They’re foreigners that are doing this. You see the Mexican flags. You see the Palestinian flags. This is a war.”

He later went on to say: “This is not a civil war. This is part of the Third World War.

“The Third World War is not just in the drone attack in Kyiv over the weekend, is not just a situation in Israel and Gaza, it’s not the situation of a couple of carrier battle groups in the Red Sea, it’s not that you have a Chinese battle group for the first time in history that is now steaming past the second island chain.”

“It’s a political, cyber, psychological, economic warfare that has now gotten into its kinetic phase. What’s happening in Los Angeles and San Francisco last night is the beginning of the kinetic phase here in the United States.”

The comments come with several wars currently ongoing around the world – including some many Daily Star readers probably hadn’t realised were happening.

As well as the Russia-Ukraine war and the one between Israel and terror group Hamas, the Syrian Civil War is still ongoing despite the fall of Assad earlier this year, while the Yemini civil war is currently undergoing a very fragile truce – although this hasn’t stopped fighting breaking out on occasion.

There is also the Kurdish-Turkish conflict, with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) against the Turkish state, which continues in southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq.

In Africa there is the Sudanese civil war, the Sahel region conflict involving Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and several Jihadi groups, while Booko Haram insurgents are still on a murderous rampage throughout Nigeria.

Several battle grounds also exists in Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and of course Samli where the Somali federal government, with the support of international partners, is engaged in a long-running conflict against the al-Shabaab Islamist insurgency. The group continues to control significant territory and carries out frequent attacks.

Asia has three current wars – the Myanmar civil war, fighting in Afghanistan and insurgencies in Pakistan – while the Americas has three wars going on.

The most violent of which is the Mexican drug war, while the Haitian crisis continues to see gang violence take centre stage, as does the Colombian armed conflict.
