A Labour MP has been fried after claiming to visit a chippy which was shut on National Fish and Chip Day.

Rising star Yuan Yang posted a snap munching the tasty grub last Friday but keen-eyed locals in Reading knew the shop was closed that day.

She wrote: “Today is National Fish and Chip Day! To celebrate my team and I enjoyed a lovely takeaway from Top Table Fish and Chips on the Wokingham Road.”

Ms Yang also encouraged people to support their local shops in the post.

Baffled locals queried whether she had really bought her cod and chips that day and the Earley and Woodley member was then forced to apologise and clarify that she actually visited in on another date.

She said: “Unfortunately, I knew my schedule was too busy to visit the shop on the day itself, so I decided to pop in with my team on the previous Friday to make sure we could send out a message of support in time for National Fish and Chip day.

“Sorry for confusing any shoppers.

“The bottom line is, please support your local chippy any day of the year.”

Ms Yang was recently targeted with racial abuse on social media after holding a constituency surgery in a supermarket.

She said: “I was really shocked.

“The person who made the comment walked past and must have seen me but didn’t take the opportunity to speak to me but then went home and posted this comment.”

She said it was “not just a racial slur but also had thoughts of assassination.”

The MP was shaken up, adding: “In the last 10 years there have been two MPs who have been murdered at or shortly after their constituency surgeries.”

Cops have since spoken to the culprit and ordered them to write a letter of apology.

It comes after Tory MP David Amess was stabbed to death by Ali Harbi Ali, a British Islamic State sympathiser, in 2021 at his constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

Labour’s Jo Cox was fatally shot and stabbed in 2016 in Birstall, West Yorks, by right-wing nut Thomas Mair.

Many MPs now refuse to hold face-to-face surgeries but Ms Yang said she won’t be put off by the incident.
