Terrifying second teen is run over in feud after Airbnb was double-booked
Two males were deliberately run over by an SUV during a bitter feud that erupted after the Airbnb that the men had been staying in was accidentally double booked by the owners
Two people have been ploughed into by an SUV in a bitter feud around an Airbnb.
Airbnb is known for causing fallouts and drama, such as when an older woman was refused to hold her Christmas dinner in one pad, for fear of it becoming a “party”. Homeowners have also been targeted, with one guest causing over £2,400 worth of damage to the pad.
But in one horrifying moment, two holidaymakers were left strewn across the ground after they were deliberately run over by an SUV. It came amid a rift that erupted when it was discovered the Airbnb had been double-booked.
The criminal incident took place when Ryan Jones and his 17-year-old pal opted to go on holiday in Cardiff, the Welsh capital. The pair had been walking across the road when the driver of the car, Johnathan Newbury came towards them, striking them and sending them into the air.
A rift had developed between Newbury and the two youngsters when they both arrived to their prospective homestay in Cardiff. However, the accidental mix-up saw Jones and his mate arrive at the property while Newbury had already been inside the flat.
Tensions between the two groups started to rise as both groups claimed they were in the right. But the two youngsters opted to leave the building after they were given a chilling warning from Newbury that he would “bonnet” them if they were not careful.
The incident clearly had left Newbury rattled, as he appeared desperate to exact revenge on the apparent double booking. Later on in the evening, four men were later spotted getting out of a dark-coloured SUV, brandishing a host of weapons.
Newbury, 33, had also armed himself with a zombie knife, “intent on violence” and causing pain to the pair, Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard. He then got into his car and followed the two men with what the judge described as the “clear aim” of running the duo over.
Both Ryan and the teenager, who was not named for legal reasons, had attempted to run to get away from Newbury. However, he chased the lads down and drove on the wrong side of the road to knock the men over.
After inflicting serious injuries on the boys after driving at them “at speed”, Newbury fled the scene. Ryan suffered wounds to his pelvis and right foot, while the 17-year-old was rendered unconscious and was injured in his chest, ribs, jaw and stomach.
Following a trial in court, the presiding judge sentenced Newbury to ten years in prison – with years being spent in jail, and the remaining two on extended licence. Once released he will be unable to drive for two years.
In their closing remarks on the case, the judge convicted Newbury of inflicting and attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm, as well as having a blade. However, Newbury – whom judge described as having “no remorse at all” for his crimes – was acquitted on charges of racially aggravated intentional harassment.
