A quarter of senior dog owners have confessed that caring for an elderly pooch is more demanding than they had anticipated. A survey involving 2,000 dog caregivers revealed that those with dogs aged seven and above have made modifications to their homes to cater to their pets‘ evolving needs, such as installing ramps.

Special diets, medication, and reduced walks are among the other adjustments made to accommodate their furry friends. The study also found that one in five owners are constantly concerned about their dog’s quality of life as they grow older. The research was conducted by Royal Canin, which has launched a dog park exclusively for senior dogs equipped with ramps and orthopaedic beds.

Dubbed the Golden Paws Park, it was set up on Clapham Common, in London, and features a range of enhancements designed to help older dogs remain active, healthy, and content in their twilight years.

Georgie Woods-Lee, a pet nutrition specialist from the University of Liverpool collaborating with the brand, stated: “Just like us, dogs are all individuals – some may need extra support as they age.”

“Golden Paws Park demonstrates how, with the right care, older dogs can still lead vibrant, fulfilling lives,” she added.

“Whether it’s adjusting walk routines, maintaining a healthy weight, focusing on mental stimulation, or using targeted supplements for joints, digestion or skin and coat, there’s so much we can do to help them live happy, healthy lives.”

A scent wall was also installed for the mental stimulation of all dogs in attendance, while easy access ramps were provided for those no longer able to jump on or off a bench.

Adjustable height water bowls were also installed to cater to both large and small breeds. Luxurious dog beds were provided for those wanting to bask in the sun, along with shaded rest areas for those seeking respite from the morning rays.

Royal Canin has launched a new line of supplements, developed in collaboration with leading veterinary specialists, aimed at supporting joint health in older dogs.

Matt Mullen, a representative from the brand, shared: “Watching your dog grow older can be emotional – a journey filled with love, reflection, and sometimes uncertainty.
