Homeowners have been urged to “rat-proof” their homes ahead of a looming rodent “invasion” this winter.

Folk should seal up potential entry points and take actions to avoid gardens and bins becoming rats’ nests, said home insurance experts.

MoneySuperMarket said: “After the hottest UK summer on record, pest control experts are warning of a looming rat invasion – with higher temperatures and excess food waste fuelling a surge in infestations.

“As rodents move indoors for warmth, homeowners are being urged to act now or risk costly damage or a denied insurance claim.”

The comparison website’s insurance expert Kara Gamell said: “Rats can squeeze through gaps as small as a 2p coin, so check your property for cracks, broken vents, gaps around doors and unsealed pipe openings.

“Expanding foam, mesh sheeting and steel wool are all effective ways to seal access routes.”

She added: “Keep grass trimmed and remove potential hiding or nesting spots for rats, which include debris, discarded furniture or overgrown plants and shrubs.

“If you have bird feeders, position them away from the house and clear fallen seed regularly.

“Ensure all drain covers are intact, secure and in place to prevent rats from squeezing through the openings.

“If you hear scratching in pipes, it could be a sign of rats trying to gain access.”

Ms Gamell said Brits should secure food waste by making sure bin lids were closed and dustbins were emptied regularly.

She said: “Rats may be small, but the damage they leave behind can be anything but.

“These pests are capable of chewing through almost anything – from floorboards and plasterboard to pipes and electrical wiring.

“You could be looking at structural problems, burst pipes or even a house fire.

“If you suspect rats, don’t delay, contact a pest control professional and inform your home insurer if damage occurs.

“Swift action can prevent costly structural damage or even electrical fires caused by chewed wires.”
