Diego Simeone despatched off in added time chaos vs Liverpool for ‘combating’ fan

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone was sent off in injury time after an altercation with a fan following Liverpool’s last minute winner.

The La Liga side fell to a similar fate as everyone who has played Liverpool this season, as the Reds relied on an injury-time winner to save their blushes in the Champions League opener in the 3-2 victory.

Liverpool had led 2-0 after just six minutes before a Marcos Llorente double either side of half-time had the game level going into added-time.

However, a 92nd minute header from Virgil van Dijk found the far corner, seeing Arne Slot’s side win the game at the death again.

Celebrations erupted around Anfield, and one fan’s antics next to the dugout angered the hot-headed Atletico boss, who confronted one supporter laughing in his face.

TNT Sport camera panned to show stewards holding back Simeone before members of his coaching staff had to pull him away from the stands.

Simeone then gestured to the fourth official about the incident, but after the situation had calmed down, he was shown a red card.

It’s not clear what caused the furious confrontation.

Liverpool looked set to run riot when they took a 2-0 lead in the opening stages, thanks to a bizarre Andy Robertson goal, as he unknowingly deflected Mohamed Salah’s sliced free-kick into the back of the net.

Salah then doubled the scoreline minutes later when he slotted past Jan Oblak after playing a one-two with Ryan Gravenberch.

However, the Reds saw their lead cut in half when Marcos Llorente stabbed home in first-half added time, before Liverpool’s nemesis struck again when he volleyed home the equaliser to level the scores at 2-2 with less than 10 minutes to go.

Llorente previously struck twice in 2020 at Anfield to dump Liverpool out of the competition, but Atletico couldn’t deal a hammer blow to the Reds again as Van Dijk rose to the occasion in added time.
