Carabao Cup conflict urgently halted after linesman suffers freak damage

The league cup tie between Wigan and Wycombe was brought to an abrupt halt when the linesman suffered a bizarre injury and needed treatment

A Carabao Cup clash was urgently stopped when the linesman suffered a freak injury.

The tie between Wigan and Wycombe at the DW Stadium was stopped just seven minutes in tonight (September 23).

The pause in play lasted six minutes while the official received treatment, as one fan took to social media and simply vented: ‘You’re joking me’.

Bizarrely, the injury harkened back to a similar incident between the two sides last season, which saw the referee need to be replaced after suffering an injury.

Adam Herczeg hurt his head when he collided with two players at the same stadium back in January 2024.

A fan took over as fourth official in that first instance.

After Wycombe announced the stoppage on social media, one fan wrote: “Not again here”.

Another said: “An injured official at Wigan away on a Tuesday night again…”

A Wigan fan added: “We aren’t going to have any more fixtures against Wycombe, all the officials are going to refuse.”

Once the game got back underway, it was Wycombe who seized the initiative and went into half-time 1-0 up, thanks to Caolan Boyd-Munce’s goal.

Elsewhere in the Carabao Cup, Chelsea fans raged after the Premier League side fell behind to League One Lincoln.
