A19 ‘hit and run’ horror as girl fights for all times and two males arrested
A woman in her 30s remains in critical condition with serious injuries following the suspected hit and run collision on the A19 near Holystone on December 5
Two men have been arrested after a suspected hit and run incident on the A19 which left a woman fighting for her life with severe injuries. The woman was reportedly travelling in a Volkswagen T-roc between the Silverlink Roundabout and Holystone, in North Tyneside, at approximately 10.40pm on Friday, December 5, when she attempted to overtake a stationary vehicle positioned at the roadside.
During this overtaking manoeuvre, her vehicle crashed into a Skoda Fabia. According to Northumbria Police, the Skoda Fabia’s driver failed to remain at the scene. Emergency services, including police, paramedics and a Great North Air Ambulance crew, rushed to the location where the woman, in her 30s, was transported to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary after suffering severe injuries, reports Chronicle Live.
She was still in a critical condition on Saturday. Two men, aged in their 20s and 30s, were subsequently detained on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and both remain in police custody.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “A section of the road remains closed northbound to allow officers to carry out enquiries.
“The force’s roads policing team have since launched an investigation and officers are now appealing for witnesses who may have been in the area at the time of the incident.
“They’re particularly keen to speak to anyone with dashcam footage of the moments leading up to or following the collision.
“Anyone with information should send Northumbria Police a direct message on social media or use the live chat or report form function on the Force’s website. Those who can’t contact the force online, can call 101. Please quote reference number: NP-20251205-1124.”
The incident resulted in the A19 being shut down for over 12 hours in both directions, leading to severe traffic disruption in the vicinity on Saturday morning. The southbound carriageway was reopened to motorists at approximately 11.30am.
A representative from the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called to a road traffic incident on the A19 near Holystone shortly after 10.40pm on December 5.
