Mohamed Salah breaks silence on Liverpool future as £65m alternative out there
Mohamed Salah has made explosive comments about his Liverpool situation after being an unused substitute for three games, while Antoine Semenyo emerges as potential replacement with £65m release clause
Liverpool could target Antoine Semenyo in a potential bargain transfer, as Mohamed Salah’s future remains uncertain. The Reds’ star player has seen his future come under immense scrutiny following his controversial remarks after their 3-3 draw against Leeds United.
Salah was left on the bench at Elland Road, where was snubbed an introduction during the six-goal thriller. Arne Slot’s team twice let their lead slip, including a two-goal advantage courtesy of Hugo Ekitike’s brace.
Despite not playing, Salah spoke to journalists post-match, making explosive comments that have cast doubt over his future at the club.
This comes after renewed reports of interest from Saudi Arabia. The Telegraph reported this week that funds are available to lure the winger to the Saudi Pro League, should he decide to leave Liverpool.
Despite having an abundance of talent vying for the No. 9 spot, including Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool’s options on the wings are limited.
Cody Gakpo has held onto his position on the left wing despite a dip in form, while Dominik Szoboszlai has been filling in for Salah on the right.
Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has reported that Liverpool are interested in Semenyo, but it remains to be seen whether they will make a move during the January transfer window.
A tug-of-war is brewing for the signature of the 25-year-old Ghanaian star, with Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur all reportedly interested, and The Athletic revealed last month that Semenyo possesses a £65million buyout clause that becomes accessible next month.
BBC Sport have reported that it will only remain valid during the opening fortnight of the transfer window. Liverpool face the prospect of being without Salah until January owing to his involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Yet, whether he’ll make his way back to Anfield for the rest of the campaign remains uncertain following his bombshell remarks, despite penning fresh terms at the close of last season.
“I have done so much for this club down the years and especially last season,” he said. “Now I’m sitting on the bench, and I don’t know why.
“It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That is how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame.
“I got a lot of promises in the summer and so far, I am on the bench for three games so I can’t say they keep the promise.
“I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager and all of a sudden, we don’t have any relationship.
“I don’t know why, but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn’t want me in the club.
“Yeah, there’s no relationship between us [him and Arne Slot]. It was a very good relationship and now all of a sudden there is no relationship.”
