‘100 offended passengers stranded on platform’ as Liverpool prepare disruption causes chaos
Widespread disruption on multiple rail services this morning is affecting travellers heading to Liverpool Lime Street, with delays and cancellations hitting Northern, Merseyrail, Avanti West Coast and other operators
There is widespread chaos across multiple rail services travelling into Liverpool this morning, with “more than 100 annoyed passengers” stranded at one platform following a string of cancellations.
Checking the National Rail’s website for live arrivals heading into Liverpool Lime Street this morning reveals extensive disruption hitting various services from different locations.
Regarding Northern’s services travelling from outside the region into Liverpool, the 8:26am expected arrival from Warrington is running late and the service scheduled to arrive at 8:55am from Manchester Oxford Road is also behind schedule. Meanwhile, the 8:29am service from Nottingham on East Midlands Railway is experiencing delays – as is the train scheduled to reach Lime Street at 9am from Cleethorpes.
A Transpennine Express service scheduled to reach Liverpool Lime Street from Newcastle at 8:59am is significantly behind schedule, now expected to pull in at 9:27am, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Additionally, an Avanti West Coast train scheduled to reach Liverpool from London Euston at 9:04am is also displaying as currently running late.
Merseyrail passengers are facing difficulties this morning as well.
Services into Liverpool from Ellesmere Port, West Kirby, Chester and New Brighton are all running behind schedule.
Based on social media updates from the region’s rail operator, signal problems at Bidston in Wirral are creating complications and hold-ups on the West Kirby line.
A separate announcement revealed that a train malfunction has resulted in cancellations or changes on the New Brighton line. Merseyrail is also providing ticket acceptance on its services for passengers affected by disruption on trains operated by other companies who have encountered problems this morning.
A statement from Merseyrail confirmed: “Ticket acceptance is now in place for both London North Western and East Midlands ticket holders to travel on Merseyrail services between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool until 10am.”
Another announcement clarified that ticket acceptance is also available for Transport for Wales ticket holders to travel on Merseyrail services between Liverpool and Chester until midday.
One exasperated commuter trying to reach Liverpool Lime Street this morning shared details of their disrupted journey with the ECHO.
He explained: “I initially bought a ticket for the 8.17am service at Mossley hill but shortly before leaving my house I saw it had been cancelled.
“It was annoying but I knew there was one less than 20 minutes later. I got to the station and just minutes before the train was due to arrive it said it was delayed because of electrical wiring issues.
“And just 10 minutes later when the next service was due it said the same thing. I understand these issues happen but it’s the lack of appropriate announcements and only finding out the train is delayed minutes before it’s due to arrive.
“There was probably 100 annoyed people on the platform who either had to find a different way of getting to work or just wait not knowing when they would be able to get a train. It’s not an ideal start to the week.”
The ECHO is currently investigating to uncover the reasons behind the numerous delays.
