Young rugby star dies all of the sudden hours after scoring attempt as tributes paid to ‘gentleman’
Adam Hegarty died on Saturday night after playing for City of Armagh’s Second XV earlier in the day against Dungannon as tributes have now been paid by the club
Heartfelt tributes are flooding in after sudden death of a promising young rugby star just hours after he crossed the line for a try.
Adam Hegarty passed away on Saturday evening following his appearance for City of Armagh’s Second XV in their clash against Dungannon earlier that day (December 6).
The talented player, who hailed from Saval near Newry, was honoured with the Wilson Cup in 2023 after becoming the club’s top try-scorer.
City of Armagh Rugby Club released an emotional tribute, describing him as a “true gentleman” who touched the lives of everyone who crossed his path.
“City of Armagh RFC are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of senior player, Adam Hegarty.”, reports Belfast Live.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Hegarty family and to all of Adam’s friends and teammates at this incredibly difficult time.
“Adam joined our club at youth level and progressed through the youth ranks before moving into our senior teams.
“Adam was highly respected by coaches, teammates and all who knew him – both on and off the field. A true gentleman who represented our club with pride. He will be greatly missed by the entire City of Armagh RFC community.”
Fellow local clubs have offered their condolences to Adam’s loved ones, with both Dungannon and Portadown sides sharing touching messages across social media platforms.
Dungannon said: “Dungannon Football Club would like to send our deepest sympathies to the members and players of City of Armagh RFC on the sad passing of their 2nd XV player Adam Hegarty after our game.
“Everyone will be in our thoughts and prayers over the coming days, weeks and months.”
Portadown Rugby Football Club wrote: “On behalf of Portadown Rugby Football Club, we extend our deepest sympathies to everyone at City of Armagh Rugby Club following the heartbreaking loss of Adam Hegarty.
“Our thoughts are with Adam’s family, friends, teammates, and the entire Armagh rugby community at this incredibly difficult time.
“Rugby brings rivals on the field, but it also unites us as one family off it. Today, we stand with you in grief and solidarity. May he rest in peace.”
