Gen Z are serving to cigars make a comeback and may’t get sufficient of them in golf equipment and bars

Experts reckon youngsters enjoying cigars so much because the legislation around tobacco only applies to cigarettes, whereas they come in smaller packs

Youngsters are going mad for cigars with Gen Z puffing away in nightclubs and university bars.

A new study by UCL has revealed 10% of young smokers have ditched fags for the old stogies. Experts reckon this is because the legislation around tobacco only applies to cigarettes, and cigars come in smaller packs.

Sarah Jackson, lead author of the study, said there’s been a “real shift” away from cigarette smoking to things like cigars and shisha. She said: “Now, around one in 10 young adults who smoke say they don’t smoke cigarettes at all, but they do use another combustible product.

“The legislation around tobacco is exclusive to cigarettes. We had the menthol flavour ban come in in 2020: you can no longer sell menthol cigarettes or any other kind of flavoured cigarettes.

“But it’s still legal in cigars and cigarillos and other products.”

Ian Walker, of Cancer Research UK, warned that Britain “can’t afford to lose any momentum” in the “fight against tobacco”. He added: “The surge in young people vaping requires careful, evidence-based action.”

It comes weeks after an OAP went viral for inviting strangers to smoke a cigarette with him. Thousands of people promised to attend the gathering.

The American, called Bob, wandered around Washington Square Park handing out paper flyers titled “smoke a cigarette with me.” The invite for the event last month included a photo of Bob puffing away on a cigarette, with the date and time below.
